CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR WORLD

How many times do we stop and think about what comes out of our mouths? How many times do we say that’s what mum/dad told me? Do your words speak of darkness or light?

As children hear words and start to make connections to their world, the spoken word be it good or bad is filed away.  Think about it? Which words do we remember the most? The bad ones are the ones I remember more? Why????? Words are very powerful. Words spoken to us as a child are carried over through to adulthood. They can have lasting effects because we live out those words.

Some words can help build and some words can destroy our spirit.  Some words can be so shocking that they are suppressed and then manifested in the person as headaches, sleeplessness, depression, failure to hold a relationship or make friends etc… depending on what those words were. For example, parents say to the child that they weren’t good at spelling or maths so they aren’t good either. So what does the child do? The child starts to believe it. Another example is when a parent says to their child that they are lazy/mean/ugly. Words can either hurt and destroy or help grow and build.

Let see what the bible says. Our words have the power to destroy and the power to build up (Proverbs 12:6). The writer of Proverb tells us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21). Are we using words to build up people or destroy them? Are they filled with hate or love, bitterness or blessing, complaining or compliments, lust or love, victory or defeat? Like tools they can be used to help us reach our goals or to send us spiraling into a deep depression.

Furthermore, our words not only have the power to bring us death or life in this world, but in the next as well. Jesus said, “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36–37). Words are so important, that we are going to give an account of what we say when we stand before the Lord Jesus Christ. ( taken from gotquestions.org)

In Rome, the eternal city lies one of the great cathedrals-The Basilica of St John Lateran (San Giovanni in Laterano)

Rome is called the Eternal City -because ancient Romans believed that no matter what happened to the world or how many empires came and collapsed, Rome would go on forever. This cathedral was dilapidated and in disrepair when the papal office transferred to Avignon but here is the eternal Basilica of St. John of Lateran as it stands now. The Avignon Papacy was the period from 1309 to 1377 during which seven successive popes resided in Avignon (then in the Kingdom of Arles, part of the Holy Roman Empire, now in today’s France) rather than in Rome.

The basilica of Saint John Lateran was built under pope Melchiade (311-314), it’s the most ancient church in the world. Due to the fact that the pope is also the bishop of Rome, Saint John in Lateran – being seat of the bishop’s residence – is also Rome’s Cathedral.

We are told in the Bible that God knew us before He created us, He knew us before we were knit together in the womb. That doesn’t sound like we go from life to life. It sounds more like He planned for us from the beginning and we didn’t exist UNTIL we were knit together in our mother’s womb, soul and body.

Jesus says to the “good thief”, “Today you will be with ME in paradise!” He DID NOT say “well, in the next life you will know better” or the like. In fact, if reincarnation was so important and being that it attempts to explain the very nature of our creation, I would think it IS rather important, why did Jesus NOT teach extensively about it? On the contrary, He talked as if when we die we will go on “the path God has prepared for us” and never even mentioned reincarnation but always talked as if we all just live ONE life.

Finally how did the incarnation of Jesus happen? The soul of Jesus came into existence (the Union of God and man in the Hypostatic Union) the moment the Blessed Mother said “YES” to the angel… AT CONCEPTION. Since Jesus was “a man like us in all things except sin” it is much more logical to look AT the incarnation of Jesus as how WE happen as well, the soul created at conception. (Those who advocate abortion like to think that the soul of the aborted baby just flies around and finds parents who want him or her and thus, abortion is good all around. But, IF we consider that this soul was a unique and NEW Creation of God at conception and that the abortion denies God’s very Plan for it to live on earth at all, that carries dreadful ramifications which might be very uncomfortable for a “pro choice” individual to think about).

The Power of the Word

I’m in a privileged position as a teacher of 9 year old students in a christian school. I understand the power of the word, I understand the inquisitive and impressionable minds I have facing me everyday, hanging on my every word.

I often spend hours planning and finding just the right word, bible reference, youtube clip, game, activity that which will inspire and nurture the growing and inquisitive minds before me.

Now please know,  that my timetable dictates when and what I teach, so all subjects get their designated quota, Religion, Social and Emotional learning are also explicitly taught.

As a teacher, you carry a reputation around the school and mine is the God one and the hard one!!!! I’d like to think I have a fair but firm approach. I feel joy when I see students who show respect towards one another and the teacher before them. I feel joy when the students take risks and make mistakes in order to learn, I feel joy when they have discipline to do the hard things because there is intrinsic value in it. I feel joy when much progress and improvement are made. All this has carried me through many years of teaching over different schools.

Five weeks ago I started the year off with a group of 26, made up of boys and girls. As an experienced teacher, within a couple of days I had eyed my class out and picked the ones who stood out for different reasons. However, there was one student who stood out amongst all the rest. From the start, he kept calling out, distracting others, he had a serious look on his face, as if to say YEAH!!!! and what can you teach me, I’m pretty smart already and I don’t even have to try very hard?

From the beginning, during Religion lessons, I told the whole class how wonderful they were, that they are all unique and individual, that they all have God given talents, that they’re all uniquely packaged, each with their own special gifts. I told them that Jesus is their best friend, that Jesus would be beside them everyday they asked Him to help them………………… I got stunned silence.

I have told them that their thoughts and feelings show in their expressions and body language, that good thoughts translate into happy faces, faces that are at peace, that their inner beauty shines outwardly, that they have Jesus’ spirit in them and that Jesus’s spirit shines out of them.

Now as a teacher, I repeat words and phrases, I fashion them in different ways so that the students internalise them and make them their own. All the while, faces have been twisting and turning and eyes rolling, as if to say, who believes that??????? I have kept going and if anything, I have tried harder…………. because I know that it’s when I teach Religion and the values found in the gospel of Jesus Christ, that I see things change. Jesus keeps His word. I know Jesus listens and answers prayers.

Well!!!!!!Haven’t the pages turned????

Yesterday, I started seeing their faces change into little smiles almost into approval. I have started seeing students walk with their heads up high. Why you might ask? I know why! They were warming to the friend they have in Jesus. In a short time, I have started seeing a change and I owe it all to Jesus, the one who brings love, friendship, hope, life and joy to any situation.

Oh by the way,  the student who stood out the most, the one with his face twisted, the one who knew it all, the skeptical one, I saw him yesterday go to my bible and then ask me  how to search the numbers because he wanted to learn for himself, he asked me with a big smile, but my smile was bigger that his.

Praise the Lord! All honour and glory is Yours, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
